- On the flip side, if you like partial light-blocking, then look for tulle or shears. Light neutral shades of translucent curtains are a great fit. The ideal choice will pastoral colors that match or contrast the wall colors of your room depending upon your taste.
- Note that if you like pattern printed curtains, it is important to identify that key base color that stands out in the curtain. Also, see if this color matches the walls of your room and furniture in the room.

Fabric Used in A Curtain:
The fabric of a curtain is the most important choice when blocking or allowing light is the buyer’s main concern.
- If you like your curtains sway with the breeze, then choose light-weight thin fabric for curtains. Such curtains are typically created out of 200 or lower thread count fabric Typically these curtains provide up to 50% shading and are categorized as tulle.
- If you like medieval soft and pliable looks and curtains cover your windows more than 50% of the year, then choose heavy fabric curtains. Such curtains are made out of 400 or higher thread count fabric. Note that heavy curtains are also called “drapes”.

Base Material of a Curtain Fabric:
The material of a curtain is an important factor if a curtain-buyer is concerned about the looks.
- For lavish rich looks, the velvet or faux silk material is the best choice. These curtains are also expensive and ideal for personal home theater rooms.
- However, for modern casual inviting looks, linen cotton, blended cotton or polyester materials do the job very well. Our personal recommendation is polyester material as it is durable, has much slower fading (over several years), does not catch dust easily and lasts quite long over years. In fact, if you get curtains made out of Faux Silk, those are even a better choice, but hard to find these days.

Size of a Curtain:
And finally the most important decision. The size of the curtain is something that most buyers wonder and need help in. A thumb rule used for most window or door curtains is :
- The height or vertical length of a curtain should be between 78 inches (200 cm) and 106 inches (270 cm). A typical height is 86.6 inches (220 cm) for most homes as you install curtains 4" - 6" above the door top.
- The width of the curtain should be twice the width of a window. Such width ensures you get a decent amount of curls. So depending upon your taste, you can choose different width size and count of curtains:
- 1 curtain that is twice the width of a window. A typical choice for printed curtains used for windows or doors with a width less than 36 inches.
- 2 curtains for bi-partisan looks where each curtain width is equal to the width of the window. Typical for windows or doors with sizes between 36 inches and 72 inches.
- 4 curtains with a dual bi-partisan look where each curtain is equal to half the width of the whole window. Typical for windows with a width between 72 inches - 120 inches.
Larger 120 inches window sizes you typically see in hotels, restaurants, and other commercial settings or in mansion-style homes. We recommend that the services of an expert interior designer be retained for such rooms and spaces.
One last thing! No matter where you buy curtains, do look for interlacing, interlining or similar sewing techniques as it makes the curtains more sturdy and less susceptible to tearing.
